Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez is a Mexican and American producer and actress who was born on 2 September 1966, in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Her father Sami Hayek Domínguez is a Lebanese Mexican who is an oil company executive and owns an industrial equipment firm in Mexico. Her mother Diana Jiménez Medina is a Mexican of Spanish descent and is an opera singer. Kayak identifies herself as 50% Lebanese and 50% Spanish. She has a younger brother who is a furniture designer. Hayek has been raised wealthy and was an illegal immigrant in the United States.

• Hayek made her debut in Mexico on the television series Un Nuevo Amanecer, in the year 1988. She was very much appreciated for her role and she also bagged the TVyNovelas Award for Best Debut Actress. Later that year, at the age of 23 she was selected for the role of Teresa in a romantic drama television series El Callejón de Los Milagros. This role made her a star in Mexico and she received the 1990 TVyNovelas Award for Best Female Revelation. In 1991, she made her decision to pursue a film career in Hollywood and she shifted to Los Angeles.
