Her parents are Kathleen McNulty Mara and Timothy Christopher Mara, an NFL scout and Vice-President of player evaluation for the New York Giants. The youngest of four, she has an elder brother, Daniel, a younger sister named Patricia “Rooney,” and a younger brother Conor. Her ancestors are of Irish, Italian, and English origin.

Kate comes from a well-known family. Her maternal family owns the Pittsburgh Steelers football team since 1933, while her paternal family owns the New York Giants since 1925. Timothy James “Tim” Rooney, Kate Mara’s maternal grandpa, has owned and operated Yonkers Raceway in Yonkers, New York, since 1972. Dan Rooney, the Steelers’ chairman is Mara’s granduncle. He was a former US Ambassador to Ireland and one of the co-founders of the charitable organisation The Ireland Funds. Art Rooney II, her first cousin, is the Steelers’ current President and co-owner.

In 1999, she acted in her first film, Random Hearts.
