When she began her acting career in 1954, she was signed by Columbia Pictures and quickly became a success with roles in films such as Picnic (1955), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), and Pal Joey (1957). She retired from acting after working for 37 years in 1991.

When asked about Alfred Hitchcock, Novak said he was fine with her as he had a bad reputation for mentally torturing his female stars.
