DIY Dry Shampoo Recipes For Each Hair Color

1. Activated Charcoal and Raw Cocoa Powder Dry Shampoo

Suitable for: dark brown or black shades of hair


  • Activated charcoal powder- 1 tbsp
  • Arrowroot powder/ cornstarch- 1/2 cup
  • Bentonite/ kaolin clay-2 tbsp
  • Baking soda- 1 tbsp
  • Raw cacao powder-1/4 cup (add more or less to match the exact coloring for your hair)

Recipe and Usage:

In this dry shampoo, you can adjust the raw cacao powder amount based on the shade you want. Take a measuring cup and add the ingredients and use a fork to mix all of them. With a funnel, transfer the mixture into a shaker and close its lid tightly. Sprinkle the mixture on your hair roots as needed and rub using your fingertips or brush. When you are in a rush, use a hairdryer to quickly disperse it.

Benefits: Raw cacao powder helps in honing your hair color shade. The ingredients absorb excess oils from your hair scalp and roots. Issues like dandruff and redness are relieved by activated charcoal.

2. Arrowroot Powder Dry Shampoo

Suitable for: Blonde, White, or Silver Hair


  • Arrowroot powder/corn starch: 1/2 cup
  • Baking soda- 1 tbsp
  • Kaolin clay- 2 tbsp
  • Lemongrass/ lavender essential oil-30 drops.

Recipe and Usage:

Mix the ingredients and transfer them to a shaker with a tight lid. Use on the scalp whenever needed and fingertips for rubbing the mixture on the scalp.

Benefits: Oil can be absorbed by cornstarch and arrowroot powder and these can easily blend in hair for a blonde/silver color. Baking soda also absorbs excess oil and ensures hygiene and scalp health. The mixture maintains fresh hair and scalp.

3. Cacao Powder Dry Shampoo

Suitable for: Brunette Hair


  • Raw cacao powder: 1/4 cup
  • Arrowroot powder/cornstarch: 1/2 cup
  • Bentonite clay- 2 tbsp
  • Baking soda-1 tbsp
  • Lavender/lemongrass essential oil-30 drops

Recipe and Usage:

Combine the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk/fork and transfer it to a shaker using a funnel. Tighten its lid and then when needed, take some of the mixtures to sprinkle on the scalp and use fingers to massage the roots gently.

Benefits: Cacao powder blends into the brown hue of hair strands and results in a natural look by masking the color of other ingredients. Bentonite clay masks any visible grease mattifies hair and adds to the volume.

4. Cinnamon Dry Shampoo

Suitable for: Red hair


  • Cinnamon powder- 1/4 cup
  • Cornstarch/arrowroot powder-1/2 cup
  • Betonite-2 tbsp
  • Baking soda- 1 tbsp
  • Lemongrass/lavender essential oil-30 drops

Recipe and Usage:

Mix the above ingredients in a bowl with a whisk/fork and keep it in a shaker with a tight lid. When needed, sprinkle some mixture on the scalp and use fingertips to massage the roots.
